US President Donald Trump warns tariffs, sanctions on Mexico over water treaty - Reuters
Reuters reported early Friday that US President Donald Trump is likely to retaliate on trade if Mexico doesn't deliver water to the United States.
Mexican officials are preparing to increase the amount of water they send to the US due to concerns that Trump may bring an 81-year-old water treaty dispute into trade negotiations. Under a 1944 treaty, Mexico must deliver 1.75 million acre-feet of water to the US from the Rio Grande every five years.
However, Mexico has sent less than 30% of the required water, according to data from the International Boundary and Water Commission. Mexico claimed that a historic drought caused by climate change makes it difficult to meet water treaty obligations.
