Shortly after, Trump threatened to double tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum to 50%, reigniting market panic and causing the S&P 500 index to drop over 1.5% intraday.
During the afternoon session, Canada agreed to suspend a 25% surcharge on U.S. electricity exports, prompting Trump to announce the abandonment of the 50% tariffs on Canadian steel and aluminum imports. This news spurred the S&P 500 index to quickly rebound and recover its losses for the day.
