Xbox set to publish more games on PlayStation 5 than Sony Interactive

The February PlayStation State of Play announcement released multiple game titles and trailers coming to PlayStation in 2025, sparking speculations that Xbox would have more Microsoft first-party titles on the console than Sony’s.

The speculation came after the broadcast announced more third-party titles, including Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds, Gearbox’s Borderlands 4, Q-Games’ Dreams of Another, and more.

The Xbox first-party game features on PS5 come after many predictions among gaming industry analysts that Microsoft might be forced to diversify its game offerings on multiple platforms. A recent interview with Kantan Games chief executive Dr. Serkan Toto revealed his belief that Microsoft would launch its games on other platforms this year.

Toto further highlighted that factors like the acquisition of Activision Blizzard for nearly $69 billion and increasing costs will force the company to introduce its games to PlayStation 5 sooner than expected. The Kantan Games CEO speculated that gamers could expect Perfect Dark and Gears of War: E-Day in the 2025 line-up.

Sony is the third company to release a teaser of what gamers can expect from the company this year. Nintendo launched the trailer of the Nintendo Switch 2, showcasing the features of the Switch 1 successor. Nintendo also teased one of the games to launch with the console, which many gamers speculated was a variation of Mario Kart. Xbox released its line-up for 2025, mentioning titles like Kingdom Come Deliverance 2, South of Midnight, Avowed, Assassin’s Creed Shadows, and more.

PlayStation first-party games fail to feature in State of Play

The State of Play failed to feature two of the most awaited first-party games, Ghost of Yotei and Death Stranding 2: On The Beach. The no-show on the broadcast came as a disappointment for many gamers, who took to social media platforms to mention its lack of appearance in the State of Play. Other titles gamers expected on the broadcast but Sony failed to showcase include God of War: Greek Saga Remaster, Parasite Eve: Remake, and Resident Evil IX.

Death Stranding 2 still recently appeared on the South Korean Game Rating and Administration Committee, the VGC, which highlighted its unsuitability for children. VGC mentioned that the post-apocalyptic game had extreme violence, gore and mutilation, excessive profanity, drug expressions, and more. The game rating committee decided to classify it under the ‘not available for use by youth’ category.

The game’s appearance on the rating website led to speculation that while its launch may not be imminent, the game’s development was proceeding strongly. The Death Stranding 2 director, Hideo Kojima, tweeted on February 5 an image with the words ‘A Hideo Kojima Game,’ leading to more speculations that Sony would reveal its trailer soon. Another tweet from the director before the image highlighted that he was seated at the editing machine but had not begun the editing process.

Some gamers wished Kojima luck through the editing process, while others mentioned their anticipation for the trailer. Gamers still did not get what they were anticipating after the trailer failed to show up in the State of Play broadcast.

Sony improves its cross-platform multiplayer gaming

Sony Interactive has been focusing on improving its cross-platform multiplayer gaming ecosystem which provides a Share Link that would allow PlayStation gamers to invite other gamers from different platforms to enjoy multiplayer gaming. The company revealed its plans in a patent published on January 2 after being in filing since May last year. The patent also details how PS users can create sessions and generate responses from the session recipients.

The entertainment company has also been focusing significantly on boosting user experience. Sony released another patent that suggested the use of AI to predict player movements and reduce lagging during gameplay. The patent explained that a camera would monitor the player and controller for analysis, predicting the player’s intention. The technology could also guess the player’s intentions through the initiation of the ‘incomplete controller action’ feature.

A third patent floated another feature, the DualSense, which could turn the controller into a gun for RPG and first-person shooting games. DualSense would help make gamers’ experiences more realistic. The patent explained that players could hold the controller sideways after activating DualSense and holding the right arm as the gun’s handle.
