Borderlands 4 to release in September 2025 – Where does that leave GTA 6?

Borderlands 4 will launch on September 23, 2025. The announcement of its release date may affect the launch window of Grand Theft Auto 6.

Recently, Rockstar reconfirmed that GTA 6 will launch in the fall of 2025. However, it is unlikely that GTA 6 will launch in the same month as Borderlands 4. So, will it be released in the three months after September, or will it be pushed to next year?

The company wants to avoid direct competition among its leading titles, as Take-Two owns Borderlands 4 studio, Gearbox.

Moreover, according to current predictions, Mafia: The Old Country will launch during the summer of 2025. Take-Two needs to determine the appropriate time gap between its key releases.

Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick talked about the potential competition between their major game releases in an IGN interview.

Take-Two wants to give players enough time to enjoy Borderland 4 before GTA 6 release

Zelnick stated that the company plans release dates to prevent the problems of cannibalization. He said if “you’re giving consumers hits, they tend to be interested in pursuing other hits.” He added that it’s generally good for the industry even if Take Two doesn’t own the hit title.

However, regarding the company’s upcoming titles, Zelnick said the company uses strategic planning to determine release dates to “respect the consumer’s need to spend a lot of time playing these hit games before they go on to the next.” This is another reason to doubt the GTA 6 2025 release.

Zelnick avoided making any definite statements about GTA 6 reaching its planned fall 2025 release date. He acknowledged there’s always a chance for slippage. Still, the Rockstar team is strongly confident about the release timing of GTA 6.

It seems like players must wait an unspecified period of time for GTA 6 to release after Borderlands 4. The longer it takes to announce the GTA 6 release date in 2025, the higher the risk for developers to extend its launch into 2026.

Moreover, Zelnick declared that Borderlands 4 remains strong despite the failure of the Borderlands movie. Although the film received negative reviews from critics, “interestingly,” Zelnick explained, “it really benefited our catalog sales.”
