Capcom’s Monster Hunter Wilds announced the extension of the game’s open beta test 2’s second week by 24 hours on all platforms to compensate for the PlayStation Network (PSN) outage experienced on February 7. The developers revealed the new dates for the OBT 2 second week as February 13, 7 PM PT / February 14, 3 AM GMT – February 17, 6:59 PM PT / February 18, 2:59 AM GMT.
The Monster Hunter Wilds OBT 2’s first week started on February 6 and ended on February 9, attracting over 225,000 gamers worldwide. Capcom held the first Monster Hunter Wilds in November last year, attracting more than 450,000 gamers. The increased demand for another OBT before the game’s launch on February 28 led to the launch of the current OBT.
The developers confirmed that the open beta test 2 had added new content to the game’s beta version. The announcement also revealed that gamers who participated in the beta test would receive participation bonuses. The gamers will be able to claim the rewards in the game’s full version after launch. The announcement also insisted that gamers would require the same account ID used to play the OBT to claim the bonuses.

The PSN outage lasted for about 20 hours and was the first major downtime experienced since 2011, when over 70 million gamers were affected by a massive PSN hack. The 2011 downtime lasted for about 7 days from April 20, 2011. The Sony Chief Information Security Officer, Philip Reitinger, then mentioned that the hack affected PlayStation and Sony Entertainment.
A CNN report further revealed that the hackers had accessed the information of 93,000 users despite the 70 million accounts that lost access. Reitinger explained the need for unique usernames and strong passwords for users’ online accounts. The Sony CISO also encouraged users to watch out for increased cybersecurity risks.
The video game company’s recent outage affected multiple console owners, with over 77,000 complaints of downtime on Downdetector. The company dealt with the downtime by Saturday, with the complaints dropping to about 5,000. The PSN downtime limited gamers from testing Monster Hunter Wilds and playing other PS games over the weekend.
Multiple gamers and gaming companies took to social media to comment on the downtime. The PVP shooter game Marvel Rivals tweeted that the PSN issue would make it hard for gamers to launch the game, applications, and other network features. The game’s team assured users that it was working with PlayStation to find a solution. The team also apologized for any inconveniences caused by the downtime.
The Fortnite team also tweeted that while some gamers confirmed that they could log in and play the game, others still had issues accessing the account. The developers encouraged gamers to access status.playstation.com to receive updates on the services that were back online.
PlayStation Support tweeted that the downtime was caused by some operational issues. The X PS Support page further confirmed that PS Plus subscribers would receive 5 extra service days as compensation for the downtime. The announcement caused an uproar among gamers, who believed it was unfair for the company to offer compensation to Plus subscribers only.
