In a recently released holiday recap video, Revolution Software teased Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror. The British game studio revealed George Stobbart’s concept art in a recap video released in 2024. The teaser came after Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars Reforged Remastered was well received by gamers.

The Broken Sword franchise started in 1996 and has remained Revolution Software’s biggest commercial success. Decades later, the game studio followed industry trends and started remastering the popular games for today’s audience.

Revolution Software hints at Broken Sword 2

Revolution Software posted a recap video featuring its founder, Charles Cecil, on December 24th, 2024, to review its achievements over the year. The video ended with a not-so-conspicuously placed drawing of George Stobbart, one of the game franchise’s protagonists, in a shorts and sunglasses outfit.

The outfit is iconic because it is the one Stobbart wore in the point-and-click classic Broken Sword 2: The Smoking Mirror. The video ended with Cecil shrugging while looking at the drawing as if to hint at the obvious.

Broken Sword 2 was first released for PC and PlayStation in 1997 and became a commercial success. The game’s setting features George Stobbart, an American patent lawyer, and Nicole “Nico” Collard, a French freelance journalist, as they uncover a conspiracy involving ancient Mayan stones.

The two characters proceed to travel across the world in search of the stones to prevent the return of the trapped Mayan evil god Tezcatlipoca. The two protagonists also find themselves opposing Karzac, a drug smuggler who is hellbent on freeing the evil Mayan god.

Broken Sword was first remastered in 2010 and released for OS X, iOS, Android, PC, and PlayStation. Revolution Software also included new features in the first remastered version to improve the player’s experience.

Most notably, the studio added a diary, more artwork, a new hint system, and a cross-platform save system that allowed players to play the game across different devices and consoles simultaneously. In-game achievements were also added in 2011 for the PC and Mac versions of the game.

Revolution Software is expected to work on remastering the point-and-click game again in the future. The studio also remained silent on when the new game iteration should be expected.

The decision to remaster the game can be linked to the commercial success of Broken Sword: Shadow of the Templars Reforged, released in 2024. Shadow of the Templars featured improved graphics, reanimated sprites, and enhanced audio.

Gamers express support for remastered Broken Sword games

Gamers online expressed their happiness on seeing the Broken Sword games being brought back into circulation. Some gamers said they enjoyed the nostalgia of playing the games with their loved ones many years later. Many gamers said that they were looking forward to seeing the teased game.

“Oh, that’s a great tease at the end! I was 12 in 1996. My daughter, 10, is hooked on BS1 just like I was all those years ago. It’s quite something to share this with her!’

Some gamers also speculated on the release date of the remastered Broken Sword game. They speculated that the game would come out in 2026 since the studio was currently working on Broken Sword 6: Parzival’s Stone this year. Parzival’s Stone was announced in 2023 during the Xbox Gamescom conference, but the official release date has yet to be revealed.
