Samsung ushers in AI-powered refrigerators for US customers

Samsung has set its sights on the US market at the start of the year. The Korean company has introduced grocery-buying capabilities to its AI-enabled refrigerators. The smart fridges were introduced as grocery assistants capable of identifying and restocking items.

US-based users can restock groceries directly from the screens of their smart fridges. The company explained that the new feature combines  Samsung’s “proprietary food recognition technology” with Instacart’s product-matching application programming interface (API).

Notably, the feature is a product of a recently announced “multi-year” partnership between Samsung and the online grocery service. It will be available on the company’s 2025 bespoke fridges, equipped with “AI Vision Inside” technology and various displays.

Samsung also announced that the feature will be accessible on its older AI Family Hub+ refrigerators this year. The company added the caveat that they need to be equipped with food recognition technology.

Samsung Electronics head executive Jeong Seung Moon said, “The combination of Samsung’s key technology and Instacart’s outstanding online grocery shopping platform will be a great example of how partnership can create a new level of convenience.”

Also, the company stated that the feature will be implemented on eligible existing models through an over-the-network update. The schedule is still to be finalized.

The functionality of the technology

According to the tech company, the technology is already assisting owners in monitoring the food in their refrigerators through its “AI Vision Inside” feature. The company claimed that it accomplishes this by employing deep-learning models and cameras.

Additionally, the technology is capable of recognizing over thirty food items. The company explained,  “names and expiration dates of non-recognized food items must be set manually.” Also, the system can automatically adjust shopping lists when items are purchased or used in a recipe, reducing waste and ensuring a well-stocked fridge.

Still, according to the company’s press release, to capitalize on the capability’s introduction, owners of these refrigerators in the US must possess both an Instacart account, a Samsung account, and Wi-Fi. They also need to live in an area where Instacart is operational.

Meanwhile, Daniel Danker, chief product officer at Instacart, expressed excitement about the partnership, saying, “We’ve all dreamt of a refrigerator that could replenish itself, and now, thanks to this partnership with Samsung, that’s no longer the stuff of science fiction.”

However, earlier this year, the tech company’s previous standalone Instacart app mysteriously disappeared from older models. The new integration promises better functionality. Although the practicality of this transition is yet to be determined, it represents a significant advancement in the integration of kitchen technology into the connected home ecosystem.

The company also announced that the 32-inch AI Family Hub+ and the 9-inch AI Home will be unveiled shortly. It is anticipated that the Bespoke fridge, which features a 9-inch AI household screen, will be showcased at CES 2025 along with a variety of other high-tech Samsung household appliances.

Possible vulnerabilities in the AI fridge

As usual, users are concerned about AI learning their eating habits, which it will need to be proactive in developing shopping lists.

The companies have not disclosed any intentions to collect or analyze this type of data. However, it is not dissimilar to how we all encounter targeted advertisements based on our internet queries. Except for this instance, the answer would be dependent upon the meal you consumed.

Although Amazon and Google are getting more invested in the smart home market, Samsung’s relationship with Instacart could give it a head start.
