Ethereum Foundation launches Mekong testnet to preview Pectra fork upgrades

The Ethereum Foundation launched Mekong, a short-lived testnet, to allow developers to experiment with the forthcoming Pectra fork before it is implemented on the Ethereum mainnet.

The Mekong testnet is designed to allow developers explore suggested user experience updates (EIP-7702) changes, staking modifications (EIP-7251), new methods for deposits and exit mechanisms (EIP-6110/EIP-7002).

Mekong testnet offers developers a ‘playground’ for Pectra features

Mekong is meant to be a playground for wallet developers to experiment with UX changes and for stakers to gain confidence in the upcoming changes.

The Foundation notes that although developers may come across some specification adjustments along the way, the primary features are already in their final stages and are expected to be rolled out on the Ethereum mainnet after undergoing additional testing in public testnets.

Developers who want to get started can easily integrate the Mekong platform into browser wallets, access block explorers, request test funds, and access a JSON RPC endpoint via the Mekong landing page resources section. Instructions for running a node on the testnet are also available, with participants required to operate both an Execution and Consensus layer node, as they would on Ethereum’s mainnet.

The Foundation made it clear that the Mekong testnet won’t affect the Ethereum mainnet or other testnets such as Holesky or Sepolia. Still, successful testing will determine how the Pectra fork is rolled out on Ethereum networks.

According to the announcement, the Mekong testnet, which will run for a limited time, is feature-complete, with all the major updates slated for inclusion in Pectra. However, it is unclear for how long the testnet will go live.

Tim Beiko, protocol support lead at the Ethereum Foundation, mentioned that the name “Mekong” is a tribute to the Mekong River in Southeast Asia, where the upcoming Devcon event will take place. According to Beiko, this “pre-Devcon treat” allows the Ethereum community to connect with the region’s importance and prepare to explore real-world Pectra upgrades.
