Canada shares higher at close of trade; S&P/TSX Composite up 0.24%

Investing.com – Canada equities were higher at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Energy, Materials and Utilities sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in Toronto, the S&P/TSX Composite added 0.24% to hit a new all time high.

The biggest gainers of the session on the S&P/TSX Composite were Atkinsrealis Group Inc (TSX:ATRL), which rose 15.67% or 10.06 points to trade at 74.24 at the close. Paramount Resources Ltd . (TSX:POU) added 15.32% or 4.18 points to end at 31.46 and Vermilion Energy Inc . (TSX:VET) was up 6.78% or 0.89 points to 14.02 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Aya Gold&Silver Inc (TSX:AYA), which lost 20.00% or 2.95 points to trade at 11.80 in late trade. Mattr Corp (TSX:MATR) declined 10.06% or 1.59 points to end at 14.22 and Shopify Inc (TSX:SHOP) shed 4.82% or 7.77 points to 153.43.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 574 to 368 and 91 ended unchanged on the Toronto Stock Exchange.

The S&P/TSX 60 VIX, which measures the implied volatility of S&P/TSX Composite options, was down 0.87% to 10.26.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 0.63% or 16.20 to $2,570.30 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December rose 0.32% or 0.22 to hit $68.65 a barrel, while the January Brent oil contract rose 0.26% or 0.19 to trade at $72.47 a barrel.

CAD/USD was unchanged 0.45% to 0.71, while CAD/EUR unchanged 0.06% to 0.68.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.45% at 106.86.
