U.S. shares mixed at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average down 0.33%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were mixed at the close on Thursday, as gains in the Consumer Goods, Consumer Services and Technology sectors propelled shares higher while losses in the Basic Materials, Utilities and Healthcare sectors led shares lower.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average lost 0.33%, while the S&P 500 index climbed 0.21%, and the NASDAQ Composite index climbed 0.75%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 1.64% or 0.36 points to trade at 22.34 at the close. Goldman Sachs Group Inc (NYSE:GS) added 1.41% or 7.30 points to end at 524.50 and McDonald’s Corporation (NYSE:MCD) was up 1.01% or 3.01 points to 301.58 in late trade.

Biggest losers included International Business Machines (NYSE:IBM), which lost 6.17% or 14.36 points to trade at 218.39 in late trade. Honeywell International Inc (NASDAQ:HON) declined 5.10% or 11.24 points to end at 209.10 and Verizon Communications Inc (NYSE:VZ) shed 2.33% or 1.00 points to 41.86.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Tesla Inc (NASDAQ:TSLA) which rose 21.92% to 260.48, Molina Healthcare Inc (NYSE:MOH) which was up 17.67% to settle at 323.59 and West Pharmaceutical Services Inc (NYSE:WST) which gained 15.43% to close at 330.65.

The worst performers were Newmont Goldcorp Corp (NYSE:NEM) which was down 14.70% to 49.25 in late trade, Teradyne Inc (NASDAQ:TER) which lost 11.02% to settle at 110.72 and Carrier Global Corp (NYSE:CARR) which was down 8.82% to 72.90 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Cheetah Net Supply Chain Service Inc (NASDAQ:CTNT) which rose 1,531.47% to 3.09, Monopar Therapeutics Inc (NASDAQ:MNPR) which was up 605.40% to settle at 32.66 and NXU Inc (NASDAQ:NXU) which gained 138.68% to close at 0.60.

The worst performers were Marinus Pharmaceuticals Inc (NASDAQ:MRNS) which was down 82.49% to 0.30 in late trade, Orangekloud Technology Inc (NASDAQ:ORKT) which lost 75.69% to settle at 1.85 and Lilium NV (NASDAQ:LILM) which was down 61.50% to 0.21 at the close.

Advancing stocks outnumbered falling ones by 1475 to 1333 and 69 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1736 fell and 1550 advanced, while 121 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 0.83% to 19.08.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.71% or 19.25 to $2,748.65 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in December fell 0.42% or 0.30 to hit $70.47 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 0.36% or 0.27 to trade at $74.69 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.43% to 1.08, while USD/JPY fell 0.60% to 151.84.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.37% at 103.89.
