U.S. shares higher at close of trade; Dow Jones Industrial Average up 0.30%

Investing.com – U.S. equities were higher at the close on Tuesday, as gains in the Technology, Consumer Services and Telecoms sectors propelled shares higher.

At the close in NYSE, the Dow Jones Industrial Average added 0.30%, while the S&P 500 index gained 0.97%, and the NASDAQ Composite index added 1.44%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Dow Jones Industrial Average were Intel Corporation (NASDAQ:INTC), which rose 4.20% or 0.94 points to trade at 23.32 at the close. Salesforce Inc (NYSE:CRM) added 2.46% or 7.00 points to end at 291.57 and Travelers Companies (NYSE:TRV) was up 1.93% or 4.37 points to 230.34 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Caterpillar Inc (NYSE:CAT), which lost 2.58% or 10.29 points to trade at 387.96 in late trade. Dow Inc (NYSE:DOW) declined 2.58% or 1.41 points to end at 53.21 and American Express Company (NYSE:AXP) shed 1.71% or 4.68 points to 269.11.

The top performers on the S&P 500 were Palantir Technologies Inc (NYSE:PLTR) which rose 6.56% to 41.44, Edwards Lifesciences Corp (NYSE:EW) which was up 6.20% to settle at 68.54 and Palo Alto Networks Inc (NASDAQ:PANW) which gained 5.09% to close at 355.13.

The worst performers were Marathon Petroleum Corp (NYSE:MPC) which was down 7.66% to 159.99 in late trade, Valero Energy Corporation (NYSE:VLO) which lost 5.31% to settle at 136.34 and Super Micro Computer Inc (NASDAQ:SMCI) which was down 5.01% to 45.35 at the close.

The top performers on the NASDAQ Composite were Agrify Corp (NASDAQ:AGFY) which rose 1,470.73% to 3.22, Vision Marine Technologies Inc (NASDAQ:VMAR) which was up 675.35% to settle at 3.90 and Laser Photonics Corp Unit (NASDAQ:LASE) which gained 83.33% to close at 7.92.

The worst performers were Vincerx Pharma Inc (NASDAQ:VINC) which was down 41.62% to 0.41 in late trade, Cemtrex Inc (NASDAQ:CETX) which lost 34.26% to settle at 0.90 and Phoenix Motor Inc (NASDAQ:PEV) which was down 33.24% to 0.70 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 1452 to 1364 and 82 ended unchanged; on the Nasdaq Stock Exchange, 1809 fell and 1463 advanced, while 134 ended unchanged on the New York Stock Exchange.

The CBOE Volatility Index, which measures the implied volatility of S&P 500 options, was down 5.39% to 21.42.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was down 1.02% or 27.10 to $2,638.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November fell 4.39% or 3.39 to hit $73.75 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract fell 4.35% or 3.52 to trade at $77.41 a barrel.

EUR/USD was unchanged 0.05% to 1.10, while USD/JPY unchanged 0.00% to 148.18.

The US Dollar Index Futures was down 0.07% at 102.23.
