India shares lower at close of trade; Nifty 50 down 0.87%

Investing.com – India equities were lower at the close on Monday, as losses in the Public Sector Undertakings, Power and Oil&Gas sectors propelled shares lower.

At the close in NSE, the Nifty 50 declined 0.87% to hit a new 1-month low, while the BSE Sensex 30 index declined 0.78%.

The biggest gainers of the session on the Nifty 50 were LTIMindtree Ltd (NS:LTIM), which rose 2.30% or 140.85 points to trade at 6,254.95 at the close. Mahindra&Mahindra Ltd. (NS:MAHM) added 1.42% or 42.75 points to end at 3,060.20 and ITC Ltd (NS:ITC) was up 1.32% or 6.65 points to 510.20 in late trade.

Biggest losers included Adani Ports and Special Economic Zone Ltd (NS:APSE), which lost 4.14% or 58.50 points to trade at 1,355.20 in late trade. NTPC Ltd (NS:NTPC) declined 3.48% or 15.00 points to end at 415.45 and Coal India Ltd (NS:COAL) shed 3.37% or 16.75 points to 480.45.

The top performers on the BSE Sensex 30 were ITC Ltd (BO:ITC) which rose 1.33% to 510.15, Bharti Airtel Ltd (BO:BRTI) which was up 1.31% to settle at 1,662.25 and Mahindra&Mahindra Ltd. (BO:MAHM) which gained 1.12% to close at 3,050.70.

The worst performers were NTPC Ltd (BO:NTPC) which was down 2.99% to 417.30 in late trade, State Bank Of India (BO:SBI) which lost 2.96% to settle at 773.05 and Power Grid Corporation of India Ltd (BO:PGRD) which was down 2.89% to 329.00 at the close.

Declining stocks outnumbered rising ones by 2331 to 212 and 81 ended unchanged; on the Bombay Stock Exchange, 3282 fell and 597 advanced, while 118 ended unchanged on the India National Stock Exchange.

The India VIX, which measures the implied volatility of Nifty 50 options, was up 6.09% to 14.99.

In commodities trading, Gold Futures for December delivery was up 0.38% or 10.10 to $2,677.90 a troy ounce. Meanwhile, Crude oil for delivery in November rose 2.66% or 1.98 to hit $76.36 a barrel, while the December Brent oil contract rose 2.29% or 1.79 to trade at $79.84 a barrel.

USD/INR was down 0.06% to 83.98, while EUR/INR fell 0.15% to 92.09.

The US Dollar Index Futures was up 0.06% at 102.33.
